If &8220;getting information off the Internet is like taking a drink from a fire hydrant,&8221; as has been said, then sometimes, the waters gone bad.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in the attribution of songs. Ever since the late 1990s, when Napster first allowed ns to share MP3s, it has become sadly commonplace to find songs attributed incorrectly.

No, the Cure didnt sing the &8216;80s alternative hit, &8220;I Melt With You,&8221; and it wasnt New Order, either. (It was Modern English.) R.E.M. didnt record a cover of the old Tears For Fears song, &8220;Mad World.&8221; (But Gary Jules did.) Bad Company didnt perform &8220;The Boys are Back in Town&8221; or &8220;Smokin in the Boys Room&8221; — that would be Thin Lizzy and Brownsville Station, respectively — but they did do &8220;Feel Like Makin Love,&8221; which, on the internet, is commonly attributed to Foghat.

However, if there is one misattribution that particularly gets Cravens goat, its the erroneous notion that Janis Joplin recorded &8220;Brand New Key.&8221;

Even if you werent around in 1971 when Melanie Safkas song (also sometimes called &8220;The Roller Skate Song&8221;) went to 1 on Billboards Hot 100, you probably know the tune, since it has lived on in commercials (most recently, for Hewlett-Packard printers last year), film soundtracks and in cover versions by acts as diverse as the Four Freshmen, Deana Carter and the Dollyrots.

But never, ever &8212; EVER! — was it recorded by Janis Joplin.

Youd think the ct that Joplin died in October 1970 — almost exactly a year before &8220;Brand New Key&8221; was first released &8212; would clue folks in to the ct that she didnt sing the blamed thing. But ct-checking is a dying art in the internet era (despite the ct that its easier than ever in our Google-ized world), and many people today are surprisingly satisfied to be misinformed.

The mistaken idea that Joplin recorded &8220;Brand New Key&8221; probably stems from the ct that Melanies voice, like Janis, had a slightly grainy, whiskey-soaked quality. Still, theres no justifiable explanation for why so many sites &8212; lyric repositories, Joplin forums, YouTube posts, etc. — continue to foist the errant belief that Janis sang the song.

Indeed, Answers.com, which posits itself as a &8220;site (that) knows the best answer to give you,&8221; offers the following in its WikiAnswers section, in answer to the question, &8220;When did Janis Joplin sing &8216;Brand New Key?&8221;:

&8220;She sang it in 1970, before her death. This song was written by Melanie Safka, a folk singer, a year previous. When Joplin died, it helped popularize the song for Melanie and took her to number one with it in December 1970.&8221;

This answer manages to get not one, not two, but three cts wrong.

Janis Joplin never sang &8220;Brand New Key.&8221; Melanie wrote it in 1971, not 1969. And it went to 1 in December, 1971, not 1970. Which just goes to prove that, while Answers.com &8212; or the internet in general &8212; might know the &8220;best&8221; answer to give you, it isnt guaranteed to deliver the correct one.

math symbols Illusion of symbols

Humans do a lot of abstract thinking. Some say it is what distinguishes us from the other animals.

In order to do abstract thinking and communicate abstract thoughts, we use symbols. For example, when we think about or discuss math, we use math symbols. When we think about or discuss emotions, we use words as symbols for those emotions.

It is easy for these symbols to be confused with the things they represent. When we neglect to remember that &147;the map is not the territory,&148; we can miss the whole point of a discussion and get emotionally wound up in meaningless arguments.

Some years back, the nation was in an uproar over flag burners. There was a lot of chest beating, emotional epilepsy and endless chatter from many quarters about what to do about flag burners.

That the flag was the symbol of the nation, and not the nation itself, seemed to have been ignored by all participants.

That the burning of the flag was itself symbolic of the pain some people felt about what their country was doing in their name was lost in the debate over the symbol itself.

The &147;flag burners&148; issues were overshadowed by their poor choice of a symbol of their frustration.

The flag is a symbol of our great nation, warts and all. Burning the flag will not burn off the warts. It is an emotional outburst that is not likely to change any policy.

It is more likely to reduce the number of people who might otherwise be open to hearing complaints and suggestions about America an even better place to live.

Burning the flag might serve to symbolically display ones anger about the government.

But to some people, burning the flag also symbolizes hatred of the good that America stands for. I doubt that was what flag burners were trying to communicate.

For many people the flag is not just a symbol of America, it is America. For them an attack on math symbolsthe flag is the same as an attack on America. They are unable or unwilling to see flag burning as a symbolic act.

It is meaningless to become absorbed in a discussion about the act of burning the flag when The U.S. Flag Code requires that, &147;The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. It was never about burning.

So it is with people who burn holy books because they dont like that religion.

So it is with people who feel threatened or offended because they see a symbol of a religion other than theirs for sale in a department store.

So it is with people who think that wearing a cross makes one a Christian.

As abstract thinkers, we can be easily trapped in the illusion of symbols. It is an illusion from which we should struggle to awake.

The map is not the territory.

DETROIT (WJBK) – Police are working to identify a mans body found in a vacant Detroit home. The mother of a missing woman stumbled across the crime scene. She was following a tip, hoping to find her daughter.

A stretcher was wheeled up to the front door of a house in the 4000 block of West Philadelphia Thursday where the body of a shooting victim was found.

The heavyset man in his thirties or forties was up in the attic.Pamela Johnsonspotted him on a desperate search for her own missing daughter.

I went through five vacant houses on this block off of a tip, and I did find a body. Its not my child, but I brought closure to somebodys mily, she said.

Johnson has been looking for 26-year-oldKalisha Madden,an exotic dancer who goes by the stage name Mocha. She was last seen Sunday leaving the Vegas Strip Club on Michigan Avenue, which used to be called the Sting Bar.

Madden is a mother of six children.

I dont want them to think that their mommy just left them. She didnt just leave you. Somebody took her, and I just want to bring my baby home whether shes dead or whether shes alive. Im hoping and Im hoping, said Johnson.

The man she found was shot and killed. Neighbors told investigators they did hear gunshots in the area on Monday.

Police told us it appears the victim was at the home for at least a few days. They said its also pretty clear he was shot inside the house.

I came looking for my child, so if I have to search vacant houses and vacant fields, whatever I have to do, Im not going to rest until I bring my baby home, Johnson told FOX 2.

She said someone called the phone number on one of her flyers and told her she would find the body at the house on West Philadelphia.

Johnson is hoping she or police will get another call that will lead her to her daughter.

If we as a community would just start sticking together and everybody would stop turning their backs while our loves ones [are] being killed and brutalized in the City of Detroit, maybe it would become a better place, she said.

sims2 downloads Q&A: Will Wright talks Spore, Sims, science

.mad_center text-align:center .mad_center div, .mad_center table, .mad_center iframe, .mad_center a img margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto

His all-time vorite movie is2001: A Space Odysseyand as a child, he aspired to be an astronaut so he can form colonies in space and help solve world overpopulation.

Now 48, Will Wright has yet to make it to the Milky Way, but he can take some pride in having created the best-selling PC game franchise of all time,The Sims. First released in 2000, the video game has sold over 100 million copies across the globe.

Will Wright, creator ofSporeandThe Sims.

Developed at Maxis, which was co-founded by Wright and is now part of Electronic Arts,The Simsshot the American game designer to me, earning him widespread recognition as one of the most important figures in the realm of video games.

Wright was in Singapore for the first time this week as part of a global promotional tour forEAs much-anticipated simulation gameSpore, slated for mass release September 7.

During a game demo, he said the concept forSporewas spawned from a desire to encapsulate everything else thatThe Simswas unable to–leading to his initial moniker for the game, SimsEverything.

His inspiration for the game also came from the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute, an organization that aims to explore the origin of life and seek potential life-forms in the universe.

Wright explained that the fundamental concept behind entities such as SETI and the Drake Equation all seek to answer one question: Is there somebody out there? Developed by astrophysics professor Frank Drake, the Drake Equation attempts to estimate the number of extraterrestrial civilizations in the galaxy.

With these in mind, Wright laidthe foundation forSpore. Set in the backdrop of space galaxy, the game lets players develop civilizations and create species, allowing these creatures to evolve from a unicellular organism into intelligent social beings.

Described by Wright as a unique hybrid of single-player and massively multiplayer online games,Sporecan be played as a standalone single-player game, as well as an online real-time strategy game where players can develop and share their own user-created content.

In June, EA launched the free-for-download Spore Creature Creator tool to help spur content creation for the game in the lead up to its release in September. To date, over 2.6 million Spore species have been created–surpassing Wrights original target of 100,000, which was achieved just 22 hours after Creature Creator was launched.

In an interview with ZDNet Asia, Wright discussed howThe Simshelped shape the concept behindSporeand the importance of Asias role in steering future technological advancements. He also likened the realm of game design to Japanese martial art form of aikido and explained why games have social responsibility.

Q: How did the concept forSporecome about? Were you hoping to create something out ofSpore, that perhaps you wont able to do with The Sims?

Wright: A lot of it was science, looking at science as a whole, and around the question of astrobiology and SETI, and how we turned that into an interesting game experience where you look at the entire universe from a very different perspective.

We learned a lot fromThe Sims. We looked at what users were doing–creating content–but there was a lot of friction. When users made something, they have to put it up on the Web site, download it into My Folder, and boot up the game. So inSpore, we looked to much higher amplification at both the tools in the player effort and also taking away the friction of players sharing content–because that was half the fun, to share stuff you made–and that totally transparent inSpore.

In addition, we wanted to increase the diversity of things that players might make.Sporehas a lot of different elements from different things. We really made every element of the game, based on the players creativity.

So you made content-sharing more seamless, compared toThe Sims?

Yeah, we were seeing that the players, despite all the hoops they had to jump through onThe Sims, still enjoyed doing it and did a huge amount of it. So we thought, what if we lowered the friction and made it easier, how much more would they go?

I think the numbers we have on Sporepedia are interesting and really good early indication. WithThe Sims 2, we also released a character creator tool early. My projections then forThe Sims 2of 100,000 pieces of content by the time the game shipped were pretty much what we got. The difference were seeing now withSporeis in an order of multitude different in terms of the amount of content people are putting out.

These are games in which youre kind of an incompetent god because the system doesnt do what you expect it to do. You dont have omnipotence. And the ct that the world is unpredictable and a little bit out of your control keeps the game interesting.

The Simsfranchise has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling PC franchise in history. Did you anticipate this phenomenal growth when you came up with the concept?

I thought it was either going to be a big flop, or a big hit. I didnt think there was going to be a middle ground forThe Sims. But I didnt envision it to be as big a hit as it was.

What did you think contribute to that growth?

I think a lot of it was the ct that we gave the player the role of storyteller. Rather than us trying to impose the story on top of the play experience, we left it very open-ended. And when players are playing the game, they would naturally craft a story and interpret it as such, and share these stories with each other. I think thats the thing that they really enjoyed aboutThe Sims–the ct that they can steer the story in whatever direction they can imagine.

And along the way, you introduced celebrities and merchandising into the game itself. And recently, Ikea was launched as an actual expansion pack. Is that a marketing strategy well see more of from EA?

Were starting to experience with a lot of business models, especially in the Asian market, like things around micro transactions. I thinkSporeandThe Simsare going to be exploring these things in the future.

I think a lot of what we learn in Asia will eventually be deployed to the rest of the world. Asia in some sense is becoming a proving ground for where the industry is going to evolve. And the expectation is those models that are developed for Asia, will be the ones that eventually become the predominant models even in the United States and Europe.

Because Asia is a huge broadband market, or because of its size?

For a lot of reasons, actually. Its a market that is developing very rapidly so theres nothing set in stone. In the United States, weve always had this shrink-wrap mindset and its kind of hard to get out of that box. And Europe is very similar to the United States in a lot of ways.

Asia has been r more experimental and has been leapfrogging technologies in certain areas. The cell phone adaptation in Asia leapfrogged a lot of the rest of the world. I think Asia is like the Wild West.

Asian countries like Singapore and the Philippines are trying to be regional hubs for game development. Any advice for them?

Be prepared for a lot of experimentations, including a lot of ilures. It reminds me of U.S. history where there was the Wild West and the gold rush. Everybody rushed over there because they knew there were huge portions to be made, and half of people got killed by Indians on the way there! Thats almost to be expected–theres a risk-reward dimension. Theres a huge reward potential in Asia, but also a lot of risks because its not a proven market and has a lot of traditional ones.

But, you know, whenever youre dealing with a situation like that, you can attack it with diversity and take a diverse portfolio approach. One might work, and not all of them have to. So I think thats going to drive consolidation. Rather than 10 people taking total random risks, you want to put them all in one umbrella. So seven can il, but the three that succeed can pay for the seven ilures and then some.

So go broad and hope at least three will survive?

Yeah, and try to go in and roll the dice multiple times, enough times where youll roll some success.

I know youre not involved in development work forThe Sims 3, which is expected out next year. But, how r do you think the concept ofThe Simscan go? Its been around for close to 10 years now.

When you look atThe Simsand how long its been in the market, its still amazing to me that we dont reallsims2 downloadsy have a viable competitor for it–though weve seen some bad attempts to compete withThe Sims. Its obviously a huge category, appealing to a very broad demographic, and the ct that we dont really have a very viable competitor at this point–its a really good sign. But, it feels like were so r ahead of the curve on that franchise, I think as long as we manage the franchise well and keep the quality of the product where it should be, itll last potentially for an entire generation.

Meet one of many critters created forSpore. Is this the ce of success?

SimCity,The Simsand evenSporeseem to revolve around the idea of playing god. Is that something that scinates you?

I think god is kind of a loaded term there. Really what theyre playing with is reality. And because of the ct that were giving players high levels of controls to play with reality, we tend to call them god games.

But these are games in which youre kind of an incompetent god because the system doesnt do what you expect it to do. You dont have omnipotence. And the ct that the world is unpredictable and a little bit out of your control keeps the game interesting.

So I think god is more of a game term and a bit of a misnomer from the role the player is actually in.

You also mentioned during the press briefing that if there was a God, it would have to recognize a level of physics in which you believe humans are actually capable of creating our own colonies. Can you elaborate on that?

According to some physics theories, there are similarities in our universe like black holes and equivalent to our Big Bang. So, there might be micro-universe underneath us, and we can pretty much perceive a point where humans can engineer black holes and create them. In which case, that in ct represents an underlying universe underneath us, so then from that definition, we would be gods. Therefore, I can easily imagine that there was some other intelligence that created our Big Bang.

But that doesnt mean that that God can actually interact with the universe underneath it. Its not a god that can actually look at you, and want you to do certain things, or even have any information go between you. So its kind of a blind god.

Because we arent actually aware that we may have created a colony?

Well, our definition of the word universe is an impermeable thing. If its something that can interact with us, its part of our universe. If its outside our universe, its forever unknowable. And I think for a lot of people, thats where they draw the line between science and religion. If its unknowable, from a scientists point of view, then its religion. So I think a lot of arguments is going to have to do with where that boundary lies.

But from a purely physics point of view, I can imagine humanity having the power one day to create entire universes. Well just never be able to see them or interact with them.

What do you look at when coming up with the concept of a game? The Sims, for example, has its own language, not unlike how J. R. R. Tolkien came up with a new language forLord of the Rings.

A lot of it comes dynamically as youre developing the idea and franchise. Youre basically trying to get a lot of square pegs and putting them into round holes. Usually, a lot of it is trying to work around design limitations. For example, inThe Sims, we always had an issue with how we can have them changing clothes. Its messy to have them open a dresser and hold clothes up and so on. We decided to eventually attack such problems with humor. Now,Simscharacters jump up in the air, spin around, and change their clothes.

From a purely physics point of view, I can imagine humanity having the power one day to create entire universes. Well just never be able to see them or interact with them.

What started out as a design problem became part of the language ofThe Sims, and now even in our advertisements for the game, the characters jump up, spin around, and change their clothes–thats just part of theSimsuniverse.

Or how Sims babies are made, with flowers floating…

Yeah, the way babies are made or if they need a small thing, like a cup or spatula, they always pull it out of their butts!

So we have these things that start out as design limitations, and we actually turn them with humor into landmarks for what that world means. In that way, you know youre in that world. So in some sense, its a bit like an aikido design sense, where you take this force and turn it into your advantage.

Do you try to meld elements like psychology, philosophy, religion and science? What are the backgrounds of your development team?

It isnt so much about looking at their dossier, but more of the personal chemistry. Yeah, we try to get team members that are diverse in their thinking. People work better, too, if you dont have them doing the same exact thing day after day.

We try to put people in small groups of six or less, and have them work in very tight little teams because we found that four or five people work very well together if its the right group of people. And we try to break up the tasks, be it technical or design or production, into the size that the smaller team can approach, and those teams can try and organize around each other.

Something recreational like video games, can spark public outcry around heavy issues like religion–something which youve personally experienced withSpore–and for inciting violence as weve seen with games likeGrand Theft Auto. As a parent yourself, how r do these concerns play in your mind when youre coming up with new game concepts?

I think its the whole question about whether games are appropriate for all ages. We tend to think about games as kid activities, but in ct there are a lot of mature games that are really for adults. And, if we see it as a viable form of artistic expression, thats okay. Its just a matter of treating that as a society, and mostly parental responsibility because you wouldnt show your young kids the movieGodthereither.

I also think games have a social responsibility of sparking discussion. If you look at really good books or movies, one of the most interesting things about them is when people come out of the theater or talk about the book. It sparks interesting discussions about things like philosophy, religion, life. I think games should be able to do that as well. I dont think controversies around a game are necessarily bad if its going to get people to have interesting discussions that they wouldnt have had otherwise.

In a 1994Wiredarticle, you expressed your dismay over the educational system and how you were excited abut having a Nintendo generation reform the educational system. Is that something you still believe in, especially with the emergence of things like cloud computing and social networking sites?

I think people are very naturally incorporating technology into their social life, and it feels like a natural extension of their social landscape. And thats a very interesting thing. Its hard to predict what its going to do, but clearly, its a generation thats comfortable with computers, comfortable with the Internet. And for them, the Internet is almost just a natural part of their body, like our cell phones are to us.

I think the ct that were so naturally incorporating that, and its basically leveraging us in giving us some capabilities we did not have before, its going to be not only unpredictable but also, I think its going to have major transformative effect on things like education.

The 17-nation currency erased gains versus the dollar aftergrowth in U.S. payrolls fell short of economists forecasts. Thegreenback headed for its first weekly loss versus the euro sinceOctober as stocks rose. A plan to funnel ECB loans through theIMF may deliver up to 200 billion euros ($271 billion) to fightthe debt crisis, two people miliar with the negotiations said.

The ct that we had an outcome that wasnt exceptionallybetter than thought has brought in a little bit of profittaking, said Ray Attrill, a senior currency strategist at BNPParibas SA in New York, referring to the employment report. Wehad a decent run-up, the euro had gone up, so there was a littlebit of buy the rumor, sell the ct.

The euro gained 0.1 percent to 104.74 yen at 10:43 a.m. NewYork time. It declined 0.2 percent to $1.3438, after risingearlier as much as 0.7 percent. The shared currency has advanced1.5 percent this week versus the dollar. The yen weakened 0.3percent to 77.95 per dollar.

TheDollar Index (DXY), which IntercontinentalExchange Inc. usesto track the greenback against the currencies of six major U.S.trade partners including the euro and yen, rose 0.2 percent to78.442 after lling earlier as much as 0.4 percent. It reacheda seven-week high of 79.702 on Nov. 25.

The U.S. unemployment rate declined to 8.6 percent, thelowest since March 2009, from 9 percent in October, LaborDepartment figures showed today inWashington.

Payrolls climbed by 120,000, compared with a forecast of a125,000 gain in a Bloomberg News survey. More than half thehiring came from retailers and temporary-help agencies. Therewas a revised 100,000-job increase in October that was more thaninitially estimated.

Euro-area finance ministers gave the go-ahead for work onthe IMF plan at a Nov. 29 meeting attended by ECB PresidentMario Draghi, said the two people, who declined to be namedbecause talks are at an early stage. The need for a new crisis-containment tool emerged as the effort to boost the regions 440billion-euro rescue fund to 1 trillion euros fell short.

This goes to the heart of the day-to-day financing ofthese nations, said Boris Schlossberg, director of research atthe online currency trader GFT Forex in New York. Its a muchmore meaningful step than a lot of the monetary interventionthat they had been doing.

Spanish 10-yeargovernment bondsrose for a fifth day, sendingyieldsdown more than 100 basis points in the week, themost since the euro-region was created in 1999, to 5.55 percent.A basis point is 0.01 percentage point. Italian 10-year bondyieldsdropped to 6.57 percent, trading below 7 percent for thefirst time in a week.

The yen dropped versus most of its major peers as JapaneseFinance MinisterJun Azumisaid hell take action on speculativecurrency moves.

The yen climbed to a postwar record of 75.35 per dollar onOct. 31, promptingJapanto intervene in markets for the thirdtime this year to stem gains that endangered an export-ledeconomic recovery. The nation sold 9.09 trillion yen from Oct.28 to Nov. 28, the Ministry of Finance said this week, the moston a monthly basis in data going back to 1991.

U.S. Momentum

The U.S. economic recovery may be gaining momentum, dataearlier this week signaled. American manucturing expandedus currency inNovember at the stest pace in five months, an Institute forSupply Management index showed yesterday. The Conference Boardsindex ofconsumer confidenceincreased to a reading of 56 lastmonth from 40.9 in October, the biggest jump since April 2003, areport from the private research group showed on Nov. 29.

With the strong consumer confidence and the decent ISMyesterday, the expectations for todays payrolls wereamplified, saidRichard Franulovich, a senior currencystrategist at Westpac Banking Corp. in New York. Its broadlyin line with expectations, but its not as good as widely hopedfor, hence the minor reaction so r in risk.

Canadas dollar slipped 0.1 percent to C$1.0153. Itfluctuated earlier after data showed the nations employersunexpectedly eliminated 18,600 jobs last month as U.S. payrollsincreased. The U.S. is Canadas biggest trading partner.

Commentary: World AIDS Day 2011 warning signs of stds

Today marksWorld AIDS Dayand while this pandemic does impact the developing world, it is crucial to recognize that this is a serious issue right here in the United States. And what was once thought to be a "white gay disease," now resembles a ce that looks like mine and yours.

And we know the statistics:AIDSis the number one killer of Black women ages 24 to 35. Black men who have with men (MSM) have the highest HIV rate among all racial groups of MSM. Overall, while African-Americans make up a mere 14 percent of the overall U.S. population, we account for almost half of allHIV infections that are diagnosed each year. And to make matters worse, we are more likely to be diagnosed with HIVandAIDS at the same time than any other racial group, meaning we wait getting tested until we are already really sick.

The question now remains: What are you going to do about it?

If you are not an activist marching in the streets or a lobbyist trying to convince Congress to make better policies for people living with HIV, that doesnt mean you cannot make a difference. There are plenty of things thatyou can do:

Educate yourself about this disease:Knowledge is power and you cant protect yourself from HIV without information. And unfortunately, its the ignorance, stigma and silence that are killing us. There are plenty of websites out there with important information about this epidemic. Once you are armed with this information, educate people around you: Your parents, elders, friends, mily members, the women at the beauty salon and the men in the barber shop. Be the knowledge broker in your community!

Get tested for HIV:You have to get tested and know your status this is the difference between life and death. And dont get tested just once, but every year. And for those who have health insurance, exactly when you go and get a physical is CRUCIAL for you to tell your doctor to test you for HIV, because if you dont, they may not be testing you. And whatever you do, dont allow any doctor talk you out of getting tested. Remember, open up your mouth and advocate for yourself you deserve to know your status.

Same goes for STDs. Having undiagnosedand untreatedSTDs such assyphilis, herpes, gonorrhea and Chlamydia increase your chances of contracting HIV. And unfortunately, STDs in people, especially men, show NO symptoms. So its crucial to get tested and ask for these tests.

If youd rather go to a clinic or testing center, learn where you can get tested athivtest.org.

Use condoms, every time:Yes, without condoms feels better. No one is denying that, but not using condoms can come with huge consequences. Talk to your partner about HIV, STDs, condoms and testing PRIOR to getting hot and heavy. And no, not everyone wants to hear about condoms and some will try to talk you out of it. But if someone really cares about you, they will want to protect you. Heresa cheat sheetfor new and old couples to help you negotiate condom use with your partner and how to talk about STDs and getting tested.

Have more compassion for people who are living with HIV/AIDS:HIV/AIDS stigmais real and can be very painful for people who are living with this disease.HIV positive people are no different than HIV-negative people except that they have are living with a virus. You cannot contract HIV by being in the same room, sharing the same toilets or drinking out of the same cup. So get over yourself and have some compassion.

My suggestion: Volunteer at yourlocal HIV/AIDS service organizationto learn more about the community. And quiet as its kept: You might not even have to go that r you would be surprised at how many of us have mily members who are positive, yet we have no clue. Now is the time to open your hearts and minds.

In the end, this disease doesnt have to be our destiny. But if we continue to sit around and do nothing, expecting someone else to save us, it will be.

wal mart Investigators: Walmart syringe incidents believed

ByAlexis Stevens

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A woman whose hand was pricked two days ago when she reached inside a pocket of pants at Walmart said Thursday the broken syringe appeared to be stained with a red liquid.

Liliana Hernandez told Channel 2 Action shes worried there may have been blood on the bent needle that pricked her at the Bartow County store. Hernandez is the latest victim in a string of incidents at the store involving shoppers finding syringes in clothing.

Walmart said it will pay for the medical expwal martenses of those injured by syringes found in its clothing. But neither store employees nor police have determined who placed the needles in various items, including a boxed bra, pajamas and socks, officials said Thursday. Investigators believe the incidents are isolated to one store.

The syringes have been sent to the GBI crime lab for forensic testing, according to Sgt. Jonathan Rogers with the Bartow County Sheriffs Office. The state crime lab will expedite the testing, John Bankhead, GBI spokesman, told the AJC Thursday.

Hernandez said she has not yet been tested to see if she has contracted a disease from being stuck with a needle. She returned to the store Thursday, telling Channel 2 she hadnt heard from store officials since her hand was pricked.

Investigators believe the syringes have purposely been placed in clothing, Rogers said. Deputies are working with Walmart officials to review surveillance footage. The syringes all appear to be the same type, commonly used by those with diabetes, and could have been purchased from any pharmacy without a prescription, Rogers said.

Re-using a needle or syringe could put the victims in danger of contracting Hepatitis or possibly HIV, according to theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention.

Another woman pricked by a needle at the store, Patricia Headrick, went to the Cartersville hospital immediately after the Black Friday incident. Headrick said she got a Tetanus shot and had blood drawn for testing, but will have to return in six months for re-testing. Headrick said she paid $1,300 for medicine to help her body fight disease.

Dianna Gee, Walmart spokesperson, said employees have gone through apparel at the Cartersville store, but did not find anything out of the ordinary. Extra staff members have been placed in the clothing department and a team is reviewing surveillance footage, Gee said.
